Ferrarai's aren't meant to be in demo-derby's. Doesn't mean they can't.
Unless an engine is designed from the start to be an MMO engine, you wind up having to re-engineer so much that the end result is hardly recognizable to the original. With Vanguard, Sigil started with the Unreal 2 engine, and replaced something like 85% of the code.
The biggest problem with using an FPS engine in an MMO is the FPS engine never has to handle the number of PC models with the myriad of armor/weapon texture possibilities. The level designer has complete control over the npcs, textures, etc. that are loaded. The FPS engine just doesn't have to work as hard at managing player data, so it can devote more processing to visuals.
