Heh, no. Characters are not stored all in one big file.
As I said, I'm less concerned with changing the data storage formats (that's the least of the problems) than I am with changing all the network plumming involving inventory slots which was coded in an extremely non-extensible and extremely difficult to change way.
There are definitely quite a few other code projects on the list that have much higher return for time spent at the moment.
